"Stars for Troops"
There seems to be a lot of controversy over exactly what the Stars for Troops Program is all about .First and foremost it is to honor and thank our soldiers , past , present, and future . Second it is meant to "extend " the life of "Old Glory" , when it is no longer capable of flying ,to give those old tattered flags a renewed purpose . This program in no way promotes the desecration of any flag in any way. In fact it is to encourage everyone to take their old flags and turn them in to individuals who will dispose of them with a military ceremony, basically commemorating their service, and putting them to rest. Many people don't even know how to dispose of their old flags, the proper procedure for this .
These people are told in detail that these flags will be used to honor our troops in a different light. Each flag will have its 50 stars neatly cut out .They will then be placed in a plastic , sealable bag along with a piece of paper with the following words printed on it :
"I am a part of our American flag.I have flown over a home in the U.S.A.I can no longer fly.The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder you are not forgotten."
The remainder of each flag is then militarily disposed of. These stars are then given to anyone who has served,or is presently serving ,or they are given to anyone who has a family member who has served or is serving now. This person is then told how much their service is appreciated, accompanied by a handshake and a salute , and on many occassions a hug.
Now we do have those that burn the flag and even those now that are "allowed" to protest funerals. Now if you can see anywhere in here where you feel we are "disgracing" or "desecrating" the flag, you have the right to your feelings and your opinion, which in turn we have the same rights to proceed on with what we do.And we do this with great respect ,honor, and pride for both our flag and our service men and women. We allow our flag to live on by it's special meaning to the person it is presented to. And for the question of Boy scouts and Girl scouts being involved in this , this might be, but I would believe the ones supervising this effort would never involve them in anything that goes against all they promote and believe in and all they live by.
I have not heard of any instance where a star was presented to anyone ,where it was rejected or caused discomfort to or upset anyone, knowing what it stands for ,and the reason it's given.
I wouldn't advise trying to take these stars back from anyone or telling them they can't or shouldn't have them. Please contact me with your feelings on this. This is written by myself and my opinion, not those of my post or legion rider group .

MIRACLE LEAGUE-2010-
Every year the Sal Squadron from the Gerald O'Neil Post 1683 in Rensselaer ,NY , goes shopping for our Veterans. For several years now we have spent $1,000.00 to purchase clothing items for the Veterans at the Stratton VA in Albany . This year when Chris called Karen Covey with Volunteer Services , she told them they were in need of sneakers ; mens and womens .
On Jan. 06, 2011 , 80 pairs of sneakers were delivered by some of our members :[front] Chris B. Gilluley [Adj] , [back row, l-r]Robert [Red} Keenan , Albert Buono [Com] ,Robert Harwood [1st Vice],Karen Covey ,and John Cleary [Sgt. at Arms].

We are the American Legion Riders of The Gerald O'Neil Post 1683 .We started our Chapter in May of 2008 .Please bear with us as we get this site up and running. We are new but we do plan to keep ourselves busy promoting all that our Legion itself stands for as we continue to grow.We have many ideas but we are open to suggestions from any and all established chapters ,so feel free to drop us a line .We would also like to participate in as many events as we possibly can to gain a little more knowledge on fundraising and the like to help support the many programs out there to benefit our veterans and soldiers , both local and overseas. In closing God Bless all our Soldiers and Veterans.
